THE 2012 CFDA FASHION AWARDS
Lo & behold, it's the Oscars of the fashion world! JUMP! From young designers to old legends to emerging talents, to famous celebrities and to the muses of the designers gathered all fashionably together at the Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall in New York on Monday, June 4, for the The Council of Fashion Designers of America, Inc. (CFDA) Fashion Awards.
A huge round of applause for our fabulous designers who took home awards from the CFDA’s 50th annual ceremony!
WOMENSWEAR DESIGNER OF THE YEAR: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen for The Row |
The twins beat out Marc Jacobs who already won three Womenswear awards, three Accessory awards, and one Menswear award in the display case at his Soho offices and the Proenza Schouler boys for Womenswear Designer of the Year, and it's their first CFDA prize. "I'd like to thank you," and "I'd like to thank you," the twin sisters said to each other on stage.
MENSWEAR DESIGNER OF THE YEAR: Billy Reid |
The Alabama-based designer picked up the CFDA's Swarovski Award in 2001, when his line was known as William Reid. After a hiatus and a relaunch as the more down-home Billy, he's got the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize in his pocket and is gunning for the marquee menswear trophy. Reid triumph over Patrick Ervell , a three-time nominee for the CFDA's up-and-comers Swarovski Award and the British-born, New York-based designer, Simon Spurr, for the Menswear Designer of the Year.
ACCESSORY DESIGNER OF THE YEAR: Reed Krakoff |
Having won two Accessory prizes while masterminding the reversal of Coach's fortunes, Krakoff is attempting to repeat history with a first-time award for the signature collection he launched two years ago. Reed routed out Alexander Wang who done it in back-to-back years and Jack McCollough & Lazaro Hernandez for Proenza Schouler for the Accessory Designer of the Year.
SWAROVSKI AWARD FOR WOMENSWEAR: Joseph Altuzarra |
Altuzarra is the last year's CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner and now, beat out Chris Peters & Shane Gabier for Creatures of the Wind, the Chicago-based duo who won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund runner-up prize and $100,000 last fall and Erin Beatty & Max Osterweis for Suno for Swarovski Award for Womenswear.
SWAROVSKI AWARD FOR MENSWEAR: Phillip Lim |
Having won a Swarovski Award for Womenswear back in 2007, Lim conquered out Antonio Azzuolo, a veteran of Hermès and Ralph Lauren and Todd Snyder, the all-American designer cut his teeth at J.Crew, making good design affordable for Swarovski Award for Menswear.
SWAROVSKI AWARD FOR ACCESSORY DESIGN: Tabitha Simmons |
This British-born model-turned-stylist-turned-designer was recently honored as the British Fashion Awards' Emerging Talent in Accessories, Tabitha Simmons mastered out Pamela Love who won a runner-up prize from the CFDA/VogueFashion Fund under her belt and a recent wedding (this New York jewelry designer is on a roll) and Irene Neuwirth, a California girl and first-time CFDA nominee.
GEOFFREY BEENE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: Tommy Hilfiger |
Over his nearly 30-year career, this CFDA Award winner has earned himself a spot in the pantheon of American fashion, dressing everyone from Connecticut country clubbers to hip-hop stars. Hilfiger said proudly but humbly, “This is a wonderful moment in my life, but I have so much more to do—stay tuned!"
MEDIA AWARD: Scott Schuman and Garance Doré |
Two top street-style bloggers meet cute, fall in love, and conquer the Web together—forever altering the way fashion trends are covered and created.
INTERNATIONAL AWARD: Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garçons |
The woman behind Comme des Garçons has made a deep impact on the industry with her cerebral designs, never more so than with her audacious exercise in two-dimensional clothes for Fall.
John Waters, who wittily and incisively accepted awards on behalf of Johnny Depp and Rei Kawakubo, “She couldn’t be here tonight because, I imagine, she is locked in a self-imposed deconstructed cell, like the St. Teresa of fashion, massacring hemlines for next season’s nondimensional outfits that will be mocked, brilliantly reviewed and worn by the brave,” Waters said. “In fact, some of the more fashion-impaired public actually feels sorry for us. Rei Kawakubo gives us undercover glamour. We know how great her clothes look, but others just think we’re poor.”
FASHION ICON AWARD: Johnny Depp |
The leading man lauded for his acting chops and raffish good looks is now being honored for his eccentric personal style.
The director went backstage, quickly changed, and then returned to accept on behalf of Depp, reading from a note the actor had sent him, “You’re the only person to have me parading down the streets in pearls, drinking in the gutter with Ms. Patricia Hearst and hiding out in gay bars. I’d do it all over again, with pleasure,’” Waters read before adding, “If those aren’t words of a style icon, I don’t know what is.”
FOUNDERS AWARD: Andrew Rosen |
Born into the garment industry, Rosen founded Theory and has since brought Helmut Lang, Rag & Bone, and Proenza Schouler into his stable of successful downtown-cool brands. His mini-empire has earned him the accolade, New York's answer to LVMH.
The CFDA President and fashion maven Diane von Furstenberg said, “This year’s awards were particularly special. We honoured the best talent working in American fashion today and celebrated CFDA’s 50th Anniversary.”
If the 2012 nominees were a familiar bunch, at least the evening's winners weren't all the usual suspects. BRAVO and CHEERS TO CELEBRATE ANOTHER YEAR OF DESIGN, ACHIEVEMENT, AND AN EVER-EVOLVING INDUSTRY!
THIS IS THE REASON WHY, WE, FASHION ENTHUSIASTS LIVE FOR! THIS IS WHAT WE CALL THE LOVE AND PASSION FOR FASHION!!!
Keep posted. I love y'all!

CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN x GARETH THOMAS
Lo and behold, Christian Louboutin steps out in the "Gareth" shoe at the opening of an exhibition at London's Design Museum last 30th of April 2012 that celebrates the past twenty years of his work. Mr. Louboutin paid homage to his signature soles with a nail polish red blazer, and, of course, shoes of his own design. For this special occasion, the designer chose to wear the "Gareth" which is a beautifully rendered classic wingtip, but with metal detailing at the toe.
The 'Gareth Thomas Shoes'! I BADLY NEED THIS!
The shoe is named after Gareth Thomas, 36, who was the most successful captain of the Wales National Rugby Team and British Lions full-back in recent times. Alfie (as everyone calls Thomas) and Louby (as only Thomas calls Louboutin) met last year, shortly after Thomas came out as gay in December 2009 – the first big-name rugby player to do so -- destroyed his marriage and nearly driven him to suicide. Christian, 47, who is also gay, was so inspired by Gareth’s story that he sent him a pair of custom-made slip-ons specially embroidered with copies of the Welshman’s tattoos – as a coming-out present. Hows's that?
Here, Gareth, holding a rugby ball, towers over his firm-platonic friend, Louby, clutching one of his signature high-heeled shoes.
Also,Christian adjusts Gareth’s tie as they dress in matching blazers, hats and two-tone shoes.
As many will know, the 5ft 6in French fashionista is in a long-term relationship with a landscape gardener, while the 6ft 3in Welsh rugby star is currently single.
Now Louboutin – whose red-soled shoes are a favourite with celebrities – and Thomas are hoping to work together on a Project Runway-style TV show to find the next top shoe designer.
In a recent interview Gareth said of his pal: “These days I own more of Louby’s shoes than I do rugby boots.”
Oh well, who says fashion and sports have nothing in common?
The $88, 877,989 dollars question is; When will Mr. Louboutin create a shoe for an Asian gay like me? And oops, before I forgot, I already came out 22 years ago! HAHA.

IMPOSSIBLE CONVERSATIONS
This is the most powerful (so far) spring blockbuster exhibition ever be commemorated in the history of the Museum of Art - “Impossible Conversations” Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada.
The two backbreaking Italian designers are celebrated at the Metropolitan Museum of Art this month, when the Costume Institute unveils “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations” (May 10–August 19). So, if you live some where in America, don't forget to visit the The Metropolitan Museum of Art
1000 Fifth Avenue New York on the said dates.
Lo and behold on the next photos! I can't breathe! I can't breathe! I can't breathe!

Schiap: “I enjoy creating for the woman who, no matter what her years, wears my clothes with the poise of youth.” Prada: “I hate the idea that you shouldn’t wear something just because you’re a certain age.”
Schiap: “One [has] to sense the trend of history and precede it.” Prada: “For me, it’s important to anticipate where fashion is heading.”
